Loose skin develops when the skin loses some of its natural elasticity and is unable to fully contract around the underlying body contours. Collagen and elastin provide the skin with firmness and flexibility, but their levels and quality gradually decrease with ageing, making sagging and laxity more likely.
Significant weight loss is another common cause. When the skin has been stretched for an extended period, particularly following substantial weight gain, it may not completely retract after the weight is lost. Pregnancy can have a similar effect, especially around the abdomen, as the skin and underlying tissues stretch to accommodate changes in body shape.
Genetics, age, sun exposure, smoking, the amount and speed of weight loss, and how long the skin was stretched can all influence the degree of loose skin. The abdomen, upper arms, thighs, breasts, and buttocks are among the areas commonly affected.

Treatments that address this
It may be worth seeking professional advice when loose skin becomes persistent, significantly affects body contour, or causes discomfort, chafing, skin irritation, or hygiene difficulties. A consultation can help assess skin laxity and determine which treatment options may be suitable.
