Why it happens?

Long-sightedness occurs when light entering the eye is not focused correctly on the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. This usually happens because the eyeball is slightly shorter than required for its focusing power or because the cornea and lens do not bend light strongly enough. Without correction, the point of focus would fall behind the retina rather than directly on it, making close objects particularly difficult to see clearly.

Younger eyes can often compensate for some degree of long-sightedness using a process called accommodation. The natural lens changes shape to increase its focusing power, allowing some people with hyperopia to see clearly despite having a refractive error. However, this additional focusing effort can lead to eye strain, headaches or tired eyes, particularly during prolonged reading, computer work or other close-up activities. Higher levels of hyperopia may affect both near and distance vision.

Genetics and natural eye development play important roles, and long-sightedness can run in families. It is important to distinguish hyperopia from presbyopia, the age-related loss of near focusing ability that commonly becomes noticeable after around the age of 40. Although both can cause difficulty seeing close objects, they develop for different reasons. An eye examination can determine whether blurred near vision results from hyperopia, presbyopia or another vision problem.

Near vision may remain relatively clear, particularly in younger people, but prolonged close-up work can cause tired eyes, headaches or difficulty maintaining focus.

Moderate

Nearby objects become noticeably harder to focus on, and reading or screen use may cause frequent eye strain. Vision correction may be required more consistently.

Advanced

Near vision is significantly blurred and distance vision may also be affected. Greater focusing difficulty can interfere with reading, work and other everyday visual tasks without correction.

An eye examination is worthwhile if you regularly experience blurred near vision, headaches, eye strain or tired eyes when reading or using digital screens. Children with significant long-sightedness may not recognise that their vision is abnormal, so routine eye examinations are particularly important.

Seek prompt professional assessment if vision changes suddenly or is accompanied by eye pain, flashes of light, a sudden increase in floaters, double vision or partial loss of sight. These are not typical symptoms of uncomplicated long-sightedness and can indicate another eye condition.
