Inverted nipples occur when the nipple is pulled inward by shortened milk ducts, connective tissue, or other structures beneath the nipple. For many people, this is a natural anatomical characteristic that develops during breast growth and may affect one or both nipples.
Nipple inversion can also develop later in life due to ageing, pregnancy and breastfeeding, scarring, previous breast surgery, infection, or other changes within the breast tissue. The degree of inversion can vary, with some nipples projecting when stimulated while others remain persistently retracted.
A nipple that has always been inverted is often harmless. However, a nipple that becomes newly inverted—particularly on one side or alongside a lump, discharge, skin changes, or pain—should be medically assessed, as acquired nipple inversion can occasionally be associated with an underlying breast condition.

Treatments that address this
It may be worth seeking professional advice when nipple inversion causes discomfort, affects breastfeeding, or becomes a persistent aesthetic concern. Any nipple that becomes newly inverted, particularly on one side or alongside a lump, discharge, pain, or skin changes, should be medically assessed promptly.
