Anal warts develop following infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV), most commonly low-risk HPV types that cause genital warts. The virus infects the skin around or inside the anus and can cause small growths to develop weeks, months, or sometimes longer after exposure.
HPV is mainly spread through intimate skin-to-skin sexual contact, and penetration is not required for transmission. Anal warts can occur even without a history of anal sex, as HPV can spread from nearby genital skin.
Some HPV infections clear naturally without causing visible symptoms, while others persist and lead to warts. Because other anal conditions can sometimes resemble warts, new or unusual growths around the anus should be assessed by a healthcare professional.

Treatments that address this
It is worth seeking medical advice when you notice new or unusual growths around or inside the anus, particularly if they persist, spread, bleed, itch, or cause discomfort. Early assessment can confirm whether they are anal warts, rule out other conditions, and determine appropriate treatment.
