Sparse eyelashes can occur naturally due to genetics and individual differences in hair density and growth cycles. Ageing can also cause lashes to become finer, shorter, or less dense as hair follicles gradually change over time.
Repeated use of eyelash extensions, aggressive makeup removal, rubbing, or pulling can damage lashes and contribute to temporary or persistent thinning. Hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies, certain medications, skin or eyelid conditions, and forms of hair loss such as alopecia can also affect eyelash growth.
The underlying cause is important when considering treatment. Sudden, significant, or unexplained eyelash loss—particularly when accompanied by eyebrow or scalp hair loss, redness, irritation, or other eyelid changes—should be professionally assessed.

Treatments that address this
It may be worth seeking professional advice when eyelash thinning becomes persistent, noticeably progresses, or develops suddenly. Assessment is particularly important if lash loss occurs alongside redness, irritation, eyelid changes, or eyebrow or scalp hair loss.
